Treatment of Gynecomastia with Tamoxifen
Abstract
Gynecomastia is a disfiguring and often painful disorder of the male breast. Excessive serum concentrations of estrogen and/or deficient levels of testosterone, resulting in an increased ratio of estrogen to testosterone in the tissue, appear to
be
the
stimulus for this abnormal growth of male breast tissue. Surgical intervention and medical treatment is considered for symptomatic patients.
We treated 8 cases of gynecomastia with tamoxifen. Dosage was 10~30 mg per day for 2~3 months. 7 cases were completely resoluted. 1 case was partially reduced in mass size, and pain was subsided. There was no side effect. Tamoxifen is a safe and
effective medication in the treatment of painful gynecomastia.
